Sergeant Gabriella Shemash

The lone cop in a family of engineers, Sergeant Gabriella Shemash joined the Chicago Police Department in 2002 with an eye on forensic investigation. “I’ve always loved trying to piece together the facts through science,” she says.

In 2005, Shemash used her doctorate in health science and a background in genetics to help launch the department’s centralized DNA Unit. She was promoted to head of the DNA unit in 2012. In her downtime, Shemash likes to spend time with her husband and step-daughters. She also loves to travel, counting Singapore, Prague and an African safari among her most memorable trips.
