RECOVERY DURING THE HOLIDAYS

In the United States, approximately 23 million people suffer from addiction to alcohol and drugs - impacting the individual, their families, friends, and coworkers. Fortunately, the millions of Americans in recovery serve as the most compelling evidence that there is hope for people struggling with addiction. Individuals in recovery not only stop using, they reestablish friendships and family ties, become productive and responsible citizens, and very often help other addicted people begin to walk the same path.

But recovery is a life-long process, and stress and social situations where alcohol and/or drugs are available can be especially difficult for people in recovery. During the holiday season, these situations can be magnified and recovering people must remain vigilant in their recovery.

On Wednesday, December 15, 2010, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and A&E hosted a live roundtable with a panel of experts and people in recovery to answer questions and share their experience with recovery.
