Why This Job?

Kathy (Ticketing) – PPD

What do you like about the job?
I like working with people, talking to people. And I get to do that all day long. I’m a floater. I go all over the place so I get to meet different people everywhere as opposed to someone who's on the same post.

What surprised you about the job when you started?
I’m surprised how rude people can be. I’ve been chased on sidewalks with a car. By the train station I had like 10, 15 taxi drivers follow me and curse at me! I’ve had some guy beat up his car, punch the hood, kick the side. For a 20 dollar ticket the guy was just flipping out on his own car! He put more damage to the car than the ticket was. I mean, the whole time he was cursing and swearing at me, but he’s beating his own car up! That had to be the funniest thing I’ve seen.

Steve (Ticketing) – PPD

What do you like about the job?
I like that you’re outside walking around, not cooped up inside. I like the people. It’s pretty interesting. It's fun to be out there.

What traits do you need to do this job well?
I’m friendly with mostly everybody. I have a good rapport, I don’t get mad when they get mad. I understand they’re mad, but what are you going to do? You just got to keep focused on what your job is.

Charles (Ticketing) – PPD

What do you like about the job?
I got a lot of friends that I made because you meet a lot of people. I like the job, but I hate the weather, especially when it's too cold or raining.

What surprised you?
One time I had this lady kick me. I gave her a ticket — first, she couldn't speak English, and after I gave her the ticket, she said "You mother--!" Then she came up to me and kicked me. She didn't kick me hard or anything. I just laughed. The silliest excuse I've heard is "My daughter is pregnant. I got to take her to the hospital." She kept insisting, "But it's an emergency. I got to take her to the hospital." But, you're at a bank in the bus stop — come on. That was the best one.

Debbie (Ticketing) – PPD

Why did you join the PPD?
I had opportunities to have other jobs, and I just didn't want them. I worked in a bank for 21 years. I sat in an office with a bunch of workers for 8 hours a day. With this job, you're more on your own. You don't have anybody telling you what to do. So you're treated like an adult. You don't have anybody talking catty stuff like what happens when you've got women all working together. It does wear and tear on your body, though. Right now my knees hurt. I just came back from knee surgery, so I don't know if I could do it once I get older.

What traits do you need to do this job well?
We have some stressful days. A lot of people yell at us all day long and we can't yell back, we can't swear at them. My post is right in the middle of the city so I have a lot of people who want to park all day. They try to feed the meter. I tag them after two hours, and they still don't get it, I keep telling then "You can't park there over two hours. It's unlawful," but they still try to get away with it. They try to get away with parking everywhere. I have a lot of tow zones on my post so I give 100 dollar tickets out. They don't like that. I had a couple of people chase me down, yelling at me.
