On July 22nd, 2010, the Kokomo Humane Society partnered with A&E's acclaimed television show Hoarders assisting to rescue 23 cats from a Kokomo, IN resident to begin recovering from hoarding behavior and begin a new life.
The rescued cats were evaluated by a forensic veterinarian and transferred to our facility where they have received the necessary medical assistance. In our care, several of the cats also had litters of kittens - all of which are adoptable.
These adorable cats and kittens are desperately seeking a new home. If you or anyone you know are interested, please contact the Kokomo Humane Society at 765-452-6224 or www.kokomohumane.org.
Animal hoarding is a complex public health and community issue with far-reaching effects that encompass mental health, animal welfare and public health.
Studies reveal animal hoarding often stems from obsessive-compulsive disorders, attachment and personality disorders, paranoia, depression and other mental illness. Many see themselves as "rescuers" that are saving animals.
Animal hoarders often believe they are helping the animals despite unfit living conditions and the inability to properly care for the animals. Frequently a few animals turn into an out of control situation where owners are unable to determine how many animals they in fact possess.
Hoarders airs Monday Nights at 10PM EST on A&E.
