Dr. Reid is a Supervisory Special Agent with the BAU, a genius and an autodidact. He graduated from Las Vegas public high school at the age of 12 and currently holds PhDs in Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering, BAs in Psychology and Sociology, and is working on a BA in Philosophy. He has an eidetic memory, and can read over 20,000 words per minute.
Reid learned everything he knows from his mother, who was a college professor on 15th century literature. While he was growing up, his mother suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. When Reid was 18 he had his mother placed in a psychiatric institution. Reid is afraid that his mother's condition may be genetic and at times "fears his own mind."
Reid is kidnapped by serial killer Tobias Hankel, who continuously injects him with the drug Dilaudid, and develops an addiction as a result. Shortly after Hotch and Gideon discover his problem, Reid cleans up.
Reid is known to be a skilled illusionist, Star Trek fan, and talented card player.
Sometimes, for an artist, the only difference between insanity and genius is success.”
