Gideon is the Senior Supervisory Special Agent of the FBI's BAU, and is considered to be one of their best criminal profilers.
Gideon is a cultured man who loves cooking, traveling and Charlie Chaplin movies. Although at times he is depicted as a tortured soul, he is also considered to be very passionate and loving. Gideon suffers a nervous breakdown and goes on medical leave after six agents he sends into a warehouse are killed. Upon his return, he is given the position of Unit Chief, but steps down to let Hotch take his place, knowing that he is a better fit for the job.
After Gideon's girlfriend Sarah is murdered by an unsub, Gideon decides to leave the BAU. He escapes to his cabin in the woods where he leaves his badge, gun, and a note to Spencer Reid officially declaring his retirement from the unit. Gideon is last seen leaving a Nevada diner.
