BIOGRAPHY of the Year College Scholarship Challenge
Grade 5 - 8 category
subject: Captain Timothy Stackpole
Our impact on society isn't measured by the position we hold, but by the contribution we make. Captain Timothy Stackpole, a father and firefighter, was an ordinary man who lived an extraordinary life. In a 1998 blaze, New York Fire Department Lt. Stackpole was almost killed while trying to save a woman's life. Over thirty percent of his body was burned to the bone. He courageously suffered through months of surgery and rehabilitation. Nevertheless, in February 2001, Lt. Stackpole miraculously returned to the job he loved. Just five days before the attack on America, he was promoted to Captain. On September 11, Captain Stackpole, like many other firefighters, responded to the call in the World Trade Center. He was confirmed dead the following day.
Captain Timothy Stackpole spent twenty years risking his life for others, and died doing the job he loved. He made an enormous contribution and is a role model to us all. Captain Stackpole was an ordinary man who lived an extraordinary life. For this reason, he should be selected for the "Biography of the Year 2001."
