Ernest Shackleton: Looking South

In the age of heroic explorers and the twilight of the British Empire, Ernest Shackleton embodied the spirit of adventure and exploration that defined the era. Shackleton’s fierce determination coupled with an indomitable spirit and leadership qualities enabled him to explore uncharted regions of Antarctica, and to avert almost certain disaster when an expedition went horribly wrong. This episode of BIOGRAPHY looks at the life and adventures of this daring explorer. It would be useful for classes on World history, Geography, Science and Technology and Ecology. It is appropriate for middle school and high school.

Objectives

Students will learn about Antarctic exploration in the early 20th century. They will come to understand the enormity of the task by learning about the life and adventures of Ernest Shackleton, especially his expedition on the Endurance.
