Charles Whitman.
At 12, he was the youngest Eagle Scout in America. He was an altar boy and the pitcher on his Catholic school's baseball team. To everyone, Charles Joseph Whitman seemed like the quintessential "All American Boy". But on August 1, 1966, at the age of 25, one day after he'd brutally murdered his mother and wife, Whitman carried a small arsenal of high-powered weapons and 700 rounds of ammunition to the top of the University of Texas clock tower. For 97 minutes, he shot at the students, teachers and bystanders below, wounding 31 and killing 14. At that time, it was the worst mass murder in U.S. history.
