The gang life of Los Angeles has spread to nearby suburbs and to the female inmates of the San Bernardino County Jail. Six at-risk teen girls, all with streetwise attitudes, struggle to survive an eye-opening day behind bars. Ashley, 17, a self-professed gang member, faces off against deputies and female inmates, leading to a physical confrontation in the chow hall. Tia, a 13-year old who seeks older men online, becomes nauseous during the intervention and makes a startling admission to one of the deputies.

The "Scared Straight" juvenile intervention program at the St. Clair County Jail pits hardened convicts against Illinois' most defiant teens. David is a 14-year old with an explosive temper. Renee, 14, one of David's frequent eighth grade targets, steals clothes and dreams of becoming a teen mom. When an entire cellblock of screaming inmates unexpectedly swarms the teens, David and Renee must turn to each other for safety. However, the greatest shock of the day will come moments after the teens step outside the jail.

At the Richland County Jail in South Carolina, troubled teens learn firsthand what jail is like when they are locked in cells for a terrifying all-night stay. Sleep is the last thing they will find though, as deputies and inmates rouse them repeatedly from their bunks during the physically grueling sleepover.

For the four teens attending an intervention program at the San Bernardino County Jail, neither the deputies or inmates seem to make an impact. Jerry, who uses drugs, threatens a deputy, and Cesar, a thief, spits on an inmate. Ultimately, the group discovers the deadly consequences of violent gang life during a harrowing, up-close encounter with corpses at the county morgue.

Oklahoma County is in the midst of an epidemic of gangs and street crime. Angry, impressionable teens are being pulled into the gangster lifestyle. For two pairs of at-risk girls, jail seems to be no scarier than the streets. They defy deputies and threaten inmates. When one girl is finally pushed to the breaking point, she lashes out, physically assaulting a deputy and finding out what it really means to be arrested.

Teens who aren’t afraid to fight back stand up to inmates end up dragged kicking and screaming into a cell. For one teen, the one-day intervention is not enough and he is shocked when deputies arrive at his house and return him to jail for a day of hard labor.

Oakland County is a stone’s throw from Detroit’s infamous 8-Mile, and the streets here are just as tough – but the deputies and inmates who run the “Turn-Around” program are even tougher. Even so, they may have met their match in Brandon, a drug-dealing teen who proves himself with his fists. When an inmate physically challenges Brandon, deputies go into action and, for the first time on Beyond Scared Straight, a teen is thrown out of the program.
