This one-hour drama centers around Jack Bauer, an American intelligence agent at the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU), based in Los Angeles. Bauer is America's best and last hope against international terrorists, drug trafficking, and just plain evil. Each episode covers one hour of real time and an entire season's story takes place in one day. This unique format allows viewers to follow characters through a single momentous day that none of them will ever forget.
DAY ONE
(begins at midnight)
The first season begins at midnight on the day of the California primary. Jack Bauer, who heads up the government's Counter Terrorist Unit, or CTU, is trying to stop an assassination attempt on Senator Palmer, an African-American presidential candidate. The plot thickens when Bauer finds out he has to save his kidnapped wife and daughter.
DAY TWO
(begins at 8:00 am)
Eighteen months after the events of Day One, Jack Bauer must deal with the trauma of losing his wife, Teri Bauer. He has become estranged from his daughter Kimberly, who is also coping with Teri's death. Jack no longer works for the CTU, but an urgent phone call from President Palmer plunges Jack back into another 24-hour nightmare. The president calls upon him to stop another terrorist plot with global implications. This time, Jack must race against time to prevent the detonation of a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles.
DAY THREE
(begins at 1:00 pm)
It's been three years since CTU Agent Jack Bauer thwarted a terrorist attempt to plunge the United States into war. Now, he's back in Los Angeles after working undercover for six months, bringing down drug lord Ramon Salazar. But the FBI receives a phone call threatening the release of a deadly virus in Los Angeles if Salazar isn't release from prison within six hours. As the CTU races to locate the virus, Jack realizes that the only way to find the source of the virus is for him to break Salazar out of prison.
DAY FOUR
(begins at 7:00 am)
Eighteen months after the events of Day Three, the CTU is headed up by Erin Driscoll, a steely government agent who made firing Jack one of her first priorities. Jack now works for Secretary of Defense James Heller, and is also romantically involved with Heller's married daughter, Audrey Raines. When a commuter train explodes, Jack suddenly finds himself heading back to the CTU for a meeting with its new boss, and soon finds himself battling terrorist mastermind Habib Marwan as he plots a nuclear strike on the United States.
